As Uganda approaches its 61st independence anniversary, 16 couples in Soroti District decided to celebrate this occasion by participating in the sacrament of matrimony. Additionally, Soroti Archdeaconry conducted the confirmation of 340 Christians, which represents the second-to-last sacrament in the Anglican Church.
Canon Naphtali Odele, the Archdeacon of Soroti Archdeaconry, expressed, “We have two significant functions in the church, namely, weddings and confirmation. This serves as our way to celebrate the goodness of God while also marking 61 years of independence.”
The event took place at the Asuret Primary School playground and was attended by a large crowd.
Jackson Ebiaru, aged 63, who married Precilla Arego, aged 62, remarked, “We wanted to give meaning to this Independence by entering into holy matrimony. Today, I am delighted to have completed all the sacraments of the church.”
Among the couples, Martine Aoru and Agnes Aanyu, aged 30, were the youngest. They expressed their long-standing desire to get married in a church setting.
Aoru happily shared, “A wedding can be expensive when you are alone, but it becomes more affordable when you have many couples participating. I am thrilled to have wed the love of my life.”
Bishop Odongo commended the couples for their decision to marry in church and encouraged others to follow their example.
