Mbarara Issues Two-Week Ultimatum: All Boda Boda Riders Must Register or Vacate Illegal Stages

MBARARA, Uganda — Mbarara City has launched a fresh crackdown on illegal boda boda stages, in a decisive move aimed at restoring order and easing traffic congestion within the central business district (CBD).

The operation, led by city authorities, specifically targets boda boda riders operating from non-designated areas. For some time, the increasing number of riders in unregulated spaces has contributed to traffic jams, blocked access routes, and general disorder in the city center.

According to the city’s boda boda chairman, Sadiuous Owokunda, all riders have been given a two-week ultimatum to comply with new regulations. These include acquiring official identification cards at a cost of UGX 10,000 and adhering to operational guidelines such as wearing closed shoes while on duty.

“We are not stopping anyone from working,” Owokunda emphasized. “But there must be order. Riders must operate from recognized stages and follow the guidelines put in place for the good of the city.”

Enforcement teams have already begun operations to remove riders from illegal stages and redirect them to approved locations. Authorities say this will help streamline movement, reduce congestion, and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

The crackdown also extends to unauthorized taxi operators and illegal roadside operations that contribute to traffic disruption within the city.

This development comes just two weeks after a major enforcement exercise that saw street vendors evicted and illegal structures cleared from the CBD in a move aimed at restoring cleanliness and order.

City officials say the current focus on boda boda operations is part of a broader strategy to reorganize urban activity and create a more efficient and accessible city environment.

While the enforcement has sparked concern among some riders, many residents have welcomed the move, citing improved traffic flow and a more organized city center.

Authorities remain optimistic that with compliance and cooperation from all stakeholders, Mbarara City will achieve a safer, cleaner, and more orderly urban space.
