The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has hailed Dr. Celestine Barigye, the boss of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH), for his visionary leadership, which has had a significant impact not only at the institution he heads but also across the region.
“With immense pride, the UMA presents this Award to Dr. Celestine Barigye, recognizing his outstanding contributions in the Collaborative Excellence Award for Institution Heads Category,” said Dr. Asphas Owaraganise while presenting the award to him on behalf of UMA.
The Uganda Medical Association stated that Dr. Barigye is one of the few Heads of Institutions who have been instilling a culture of excellence among the cadres that he leads.
Accordingly, Dr. Barigye has been leading by example, encouraging fellow doctors to adhere strictly to the principles of Hippocrates.
In contemporary times, when the ‘business mindset’ often competes with the medical profession as a calling, it becomes challenging for young medics to prioritize saving lives.
Preventing such detrimental tendencies may not solely rely on punitive measures but rather on advocating for a mindset change, especially among fresh medics who may view medicine primarily as a lucrative venture.
“We thank him (Dr. Barigye) for his commitment to healthcare and mentorship of junior health workers!” commented Dr. Robert Mukembo, a Member of the Uganda Medical Association.
According to the staff at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, their director has been fostering a culture of furthering studies among them. This explains why many medics at this facility have attained additional qualifications, preparing them for more opportunities and enhancing their skills in healthcare delivery.
Upon receiving the Presidential Award, Dr. Barigye expressed gratitude to UMA Management for the recognition. He emphasized the importance of such awards in one’s career, especially for young cadres.
However, he urged the medical fraternity to continue adhering to standard operating procedures while dealing with patients.
