Pop star Azawi has spoken out in support of Uganda’s newly launched Electronic Penalty System (EPS), sharing the personal tragedy that shapes her stance. Despite public criticism of the system’s implementation, the Quinamino singer stands firm — she lost “the love of her life” in a speeding-related accident.

In a heartfelt post on social media, Azawi expressed how the EPS targets reckless driving, especially at night. She pointed out that “those traffic fines aren’t really a bad idea… if you work at night, you would understand.” She urged the government to extend the system outside Kampala, where most fatal crashes occur.

Her comments sparked a wave of backlash: critics questioned her position and accused her of siding with the government over the people — despite her reputation as a voice for social justice. Many wondered how she could support a penalty system that has resulted in fines perceived as unfair.

Azawi responded by revealing her heartache: her partner died due to excessive speed on the road. That personal loss, she explained, has deeply influenced her view. “I lost the love of my life because of reckless driving,” she shared. “This isn’t about politics — it’s about saving lives.”

Her honesty shifts the discussion from policy to empathy. While some remain skeptical of EPS’s fairness and function, Azawi’s tragedy serves as a powerful reminder: behind every speeding ticket is a potential tragedy — or worse.
