Katakwi, Uganda – As President Museveni is scheduled to visit Katakwi district on the 5th of July, locals in the district have documented disturbing government projects that they say they want to present to him so that the responsible ministries can be held accountable.
President Museveni is expected to be in Katakwi on the 5th, where he will be interacting with the locals about service delivery in the district.
Betty Agemo from Toroma told the media that there are many projects worth millions of shillings that have been done poorly, and they will present these to the President.
“This is campaign time, so we shall be open to tell the President what’s disturbing us and how his government officials have done shoddy work and retained a lot of money for their own benefit,” she said.
Martine Okello said there’s a dome constructed by the Ministry of Agriculture which has collapsed due to shoddy work, yet the amount of money put into the project was huge.
“Our own engineers have failed us. We have valley tanks under the Ministry of Water and the Ministry of Agriculture that were done poorly, and they are on the verge of causing disaster to the community,” he said.
According to Mr. Okello, they will also report to the President how some local politicians have been conniving with government engineers to do shoddy work so that part of the project money is shared among them.
“This is a political season—accountability must be seen, because we are tired of people playing with our money. A few individuals enrich themselves while we, the wanainchi, are suffering,” he said.
Patrick Odeng, one of the Citizen Coalition members, said they have invited media houses to visit those projects before the President’s trip to Katakwi, so that in case some politicians try to whitewash the truth, the facts will be clear.
Two weeks ago, a group of journalists from Kampala toured some of the projects secretly in Katakwi and discovered disturbing issues in the works.
