Winnie Byanyima: 'I Am Fighting for My Husband’s Freedom While Leading UNAIDS

Ms. Winnie Byanyima who is the director of UNAIDS has detailed how she’s juggling between fighting for freedom as well as defending her incarcerated husband, Dr. Col. Kiiza Besigye.

It should be noted that Besigye was arrested from Kenya recently and he’s currently at Luzira Prison facing charges of arms possession as well as plotting to overthrow the government.

Byanyima has been an active voice and figure in the past couple of days as she tries to secure her man’s release. Appearing in an interview with Citizen TV Kenya, she said that she has to balance between fighting for the release of her husband as well as executing her UNAIDS job.

She also said that she decided to base in Kenya in fighting for Besigye’s freedom because it’s where she feels safe. According to her, the four time presidential candidate was wrongfully accused and she wants him to be tried in the civilian court and not a military court.

“Currently I have to balance between caring for my husband and doing my job. However, I feel very safe here in Kenya

I am fighting for freedom for my husband and defending him to have justice in a civilian court.”

“Besigye is being wrongfully tried in a military court because the burden of proof there is much lower than it is in a civilian court. He is being charged with illegal possession of guns and prejudicing the capacity of security forces which is a very vague,” said Byanyima.

Furthermore, she detailed how her the former FDC president was seized in Kenya and brought back to Uganda.
He was bundled in a car and driven all the way to Uganda. Somewhere towards Nakuru, the 4 men who abducted him forgot and started speaking in his language that he understood clearly according to Byanyima.

Additionally, the mother of one and distinguished leader said that President Museveni doesn’t take differences lightly. This is apparently why some top NRM cadres have either fallen out with him or deserted politics.
