The Ministry of Works and Transport has introduced new, stringent laws for boda boda operators in a bid to sanitize road usage.
At a consultative meeting held between the Ministry and motorcycle assembly companies, dealers, and financiers, it was agreed that “All motorcycle sales will include two standard helmets, one for the rider and one for the passenger.”
According to the Minister, Gen. Katumba Wamala, this regulation will ensure that motorbikes leave the assembly with two standard helmets.
The statement from the Ministry further explained that regulations for the standardization of helmets are already in place, and these must be strictly adhered to for any motorcycle to be registered, in accordance with the UNBS guidelines.
This is just one of the measures being implemented to streamline the boda boda industry and restore order to Ugandan roads, according to the Ministry.
Additionally, boda boda riders in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area will be required to wear uniform reflector jackets. The jackets will include a photo, name, and contact details of the rider, along with a QR code. Furthermore, the jackets will be color-coded according to the various divisions.
Examples of the color codes include:
- Pink – Kampala Central
- Dark Blue – Makindye
- Forest Green – Nakawa
These details will also be synced with the information of the motorcycle being ridden, including the registered number plate.
Additionally, Boda-Boda riders in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area to be dressed in uniform identifier reflector jackets.
