Minister Nameere Launches 69km Road Project to Boost Agriculture in Acholi Sub-region

AGAGO – The government has officially launched the construction of 69 kilometres of community access roads in the Acholi Sub-region, a move aimed at improving rural connectivity and boosting agricultural productivity in Northern Uganda.

The Rural Development and Food Security (RUDSEC) Project, funded by the Government of Uganda in partnership with the German Government through KfW Development Bank, was unveiled on Wednesday by the Minister of State for Local Government, Hon. Justine Nameere Nsubuga.

The project covers four critical road sections: Kalongo–Lomoi Road Section A (15km) and Section B (14.9km) in Agago District, Corner–Ogwec–Tenten Road (21.6km) in Lamwo District, and Puranga–Ogonyo–Achola Stream Road (18km) in Pader District.

“This initiative will reduce transport costs, minimise post-harvest losses, and connect farmers to markets in line with the Parish Development Model objectives,” Hon. Nameere said during the launch.

The Minister warned contractors against delivering substandard work, causing delays, or engaging in corrupt practices, emphasising that the government would not tolerate any compromise on quality.

“I want to see climate-resilient roads that serve our communities for generations,” she said, adding that the Ministry would provide full political support to ensure successful implementation.

Hon. Nameere challenged Resident District Commissioners, District Chairpersons, and Chief Administrative Officers in the beneficiary districts to provide strict oversight through regular site inspections.

She called upon communities to protect project equipment and road infrastructure from vandalism, cooperate with contractors, and take advantage of employment opportunities created during construction.

Residents were also encouraged to increase agricultural production and strengthen savings groups to fully benefit from improved market access once the roads are completed.

“I urge our people to prepare now so that when these roads open up, they are ready to reap the economic benefits,” she said.

The launch was attended by the area Members of Parliament, political and technical leaders from Agago, Lamwo, and Pader districts, officials from the Ministry of Local Government, development partners, contractors, and community members.

Hon. Nameere thanked the German Government and KfW Development Bank for their continued partnership, describing the collaboration as “laying a strong foundation for sustainable economic growth in Northern Uganda.”

The Minister pledged to work closely with the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, and the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ben Kumumanya, to ensure better project delivery.

Construction works are expected to commence immediately on all four road sections.
