Police in Sheema District are investigating circumstances that led to the death of a 23-year-old senior six student at Kitagata Secondary School in Kitagata Town Council, Sheema District. The student’s body was found in the school toilet after days of going missing.
The deceased has been identified as Caption Rwamamanzi, who went missing on the evening of November 12, 2023, according to the Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson, SSP Marcial Tumusiime.
Sources from fellow students at the school say that Rwamamanzi was last seen at the school on Sunday as they prepared to write their first examination on Monday for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education, which commenced on Monday, November 13, 2023.
Asaph Mwije, the Kitagata Secondary School Deputy Headteacher, told this reporter that school authorities came to understand that Rwamamanzi was missing from the school on the same day as they conducted a night roll call at around 9:45 p.m.
Mwije added that despite a thorough search for him in all corners of the school, they failed to trace his whereabouts, hence informing the police who also started a search in the school vicinity, nearby bushes, and the surrounding buildings, all of which yielded no fruits of success.
It was not until Wednesday evening, November 15, 2023, that Rwamamanzi’s body was found in one of the dilapidated school toilets.
The incident left many students, especially the candidates he was supposed to sit exams with, wondering how their friend and classmate ended up in such a tearful and regrettable death.
A section of parents whom our reporter found at the scene after the recovery of Rwamamanzi’s body narrated that they want the police to do thorough investigations to establish the likely cause of this death.
By press time, the body was being conveyed to Kitagata Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
