Museveni Hails U.S. Ambassador Popp for Strengthening Uganda–America Ties

President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday bid farewell to the outgoing United States Ambassador to Uganda, William W. Popp, praising him for his contribution to strengthening diplomatic relations between Uganda and the United States.

The meeting took place at State Lodge Nakasero in Kampala, where the two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest and ongoing cooperation between the two countries.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Museveni expressed appreciation for Ambassador Popp’s service during his tenure in Uganda.

“I received H.E. William W. Popp, the outgoing Ambassador of the United States to Uganda, at State Lodge Nakasero. I thank Ambassador Popp for his service over the past years and for his contribution to strengthening the cordial relations between Uganda and the United States,” Museveni wrote.

The President noted that their discussions focused on issues of mutual interest and cooperation, reflecting the longstanding partnership between the two nations.

Museveni also wished the outgoing diplomat success in his future assignments and endeavors.

Ambassador Popp, who presented his credentials to the Ugandan government in September 2023, has been involved in advancing cooperation between Kampala and Washington in areas such as health, education, trade, and regional security. During his tenure, the United States continued to support Uganda’s efforts in HIV/AIDS prevention and response to disease outbreaks, including Ebola.

His departure comes at a time when Uganda and the United States continue to engage on a range of development and security issues, despite occasional diplomatic disagreements that have emerged in recent years.

With Ambassador Popp’s tour of duty coming to an end, Deputy Chief of Mission Mikael Cleverley is expected to serve as Chargé d’Affaires until a new U.S. ambassador is appointed.
