The morning of Thursday, June 6th, brought somber news as the National Unity Platform (NUP) mourned the loss of Comrade Okwai James Wasoti, affectionately known as ‘Kabogo’. Comrade Kabogo, a dedicated servant of the party, had long been a pillar of security, safeguarding the premises from the days of Kamwokya to the present Makerere Kavule headquarters. His commitment was unwavering, even during the 2020/21 campaign trail, until illness intervened, limiting his active involvement.
Despite battling illness, Comrade Kabogo remained committed in his duties, often disregarding medical advice to rest. His dedication was not merely a show of defiance but a testament to his loyalty to the party’s cause.
Frequent visits to the hospital became routine for Comrade Kabogo as doctors monitored his health. Tragically, it was during one of these routine check-ups that he passed away, leaving behind a newlywed wife and a grieving party fraternity. A vigil was scheduled at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, followed by a church service at Christ Sanctuary International Church, Kireka, and burial in Paidha town, Zombo District, on Saturday, June 8th.
In the wake of his passing, tributes poured in from party leaders, each reflecting on Comrade Kabogo’s invaluable contributions:
President Kyagulanyi Ssentamu expressed profound sadness at the loss of Comrade Kabogo, highlighting his dedicated service since the Kyadondo Parliamentary campaign in 2017. From the People Power Movement to NUP, Kabogo led the gate security team with diligence until his last day.
Secretary General David. L. Rubongoya recalled Kabogo’s unwavering commitment despite illness, describing him as a humble and disciplined comrade. His dedication as gatekeeper at the NUP Headquarters was exemplary.
LoP/Party spokesperson Joel. B. Ssenyonyi, in his tribute, fondly remembered Kabogo’s loyalty and role as gatekeeper, offering condolences to his wife, family, and the entire NUP community.
He added that Comrade Kabogo’s legacy of dedication and service will forever remain etched in the memories of those he served and prayed his gentle soul would find eternal peace.
