Travel along the Kampala-Gulu Highway via the Karuma Bridge in Kiryandongo District is expected to face disruptions starting Friday through the weekend. The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) will conduct quality inspections as part of plans for the construction of a new bridge.
The Karuma Bridge serves as a crucial link between the northern and southern regions of Uganda, as well as a transit route between coastal ports and landlocked South Sudan.
UNRA stated that the diagnostic inspections, to be carried out by a private consultant, aim to evaluate the current condition and remaining lifespan of the bridge. This assessment will inform potential interventions to reinforce the bridge’s structure.
According to Allan Ssempebwa, UNRA’s Manager of Public and Corporate Affairs, the road will be intermittently closed for one to two-hour intervals between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm from Friday to Monday. These closures are necessary to ensure the consultant can safely conduct detailed inspections and measurements.
Ssempebwa assured that arrangements will be made to minimize disruptions and provide alternative routes for travelers during the assessment period.
He added, “In the near future, following adequate consultations with relevant stakeholders, we will notify the general public about changes in traffic flow at Karuma Bridge to facilitate this critical assignment on the National Road Network.”
