A somber atmosphere enveloped All Saints Cathedral Church Kampala as mourners gathered to bid farewell to Dr. Martin Aliker, whose casket was solemnly brought into the cathedral on Friday. Notable figures including former Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki, IGG Beti Kamya, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and government officials joined friends and relatives to honor Aliker’s memory during the final funeral service.
In heartfelt remarks, widow Camille Agnes Moore fondly recalled her husband, describing him as a loving, handsome, and God-fearing partner. With tears and nostalgia, Moore reminisced about their 65-year marriage, urging couples to embrace Jesus Christ as a cornerstone of their relationships. She emphasized the importance of communication and faith in navigating marital challenges, expressing hope that others might also experience enduring love and companionship.
Moore shared fond memories of her early days with Aliker, highlighting his simplicity, charm, and role-model qualities. Despite being a foreigner upon her marriage to Aliker, Moore expressed gratitude for Uganda’s hospitality and the warmth of its people, which transformed the nation into her beloved home. She fondly remembered the acceptance and love she received from Aliker’s family, including his mother, who welcomed her with open arms.
Acknowledging the government’s gesture of granting her husband a state burial, Moore expressed both surprise and gratitude, praising President Yoweri Museveni and officials for the honor bestowed upon Aliker. The recognition underscored Aliker’s significance within the community and his contributions to Uganda’s development.
John Mugerwa, speaking on behalf of friends, celebrated Aliker’s life, describing him as a distinguished gentleman and cherished friend. Mugerwa reminisced about Aliker’s humor, intellect, and zest for life, which brought joy to those around him. Despite health challenges, Aliker’s resilience and positivity remained unwavering, inspiring all who knew him.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa shared poignant anecdotes about Aliker’s impact, recalling his admiration for Aliker’s resilience and grace, especially in the face of adversity. Tayebwa reflected on Aliker’s legacy as a respected leader and his enduring commitment to serving others.
Bishop Hannington Mutebi presided over the funeral service, offering words of comfort and solace to grieving family and friends.
Born in Gulu District in 1928, Aliker’s journey was marked by academic excellence and a commitment to service. Educated at Gulu High School and Kings College Budo, Aliker pursued higher education in the United States, graduating from Northwestern University. Throughout his life, he embodied the motto “Be true unto yourself,” leaving behind a legacy of integrity and dedication.
Dr. Martin Aliker passed away on April 15, 2024, at Nakasero Hospital Kampala, leaving behind his widow Camille, four children, and grandchildren. As mourners bid farewell to a beloved husband, father, and friend, they honored his memory and celebrated a life well-lived.
