Makerere Mourns the Passing of Prof. Justin Epelu-Opio

Makerere University is saddened to announce the passing of Prof. Justin Epelu-Opio, a cherished member of our academic community.

According to Umar Kakumba (PhD), acting Vice Chancellor of the Univsersity, Prof. Epelu-Opio’s death brings deep sorrow to the Makerere University Council, Senate, Alumni, and students. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family, who have lost a beloved father, grandfather, mentor, son, and friend. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers to them during this difficult time.

Prof. Epelu-Opio served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Makerere University from 1993 to 2004, making him the longest-serving individual in that role before changes in university governance. His tenure coincided with significant transformations in university administration and academic affairs. Beyond administrative duties, he was a dedicated academic who contributed selflessly to the university’s progress. His impact extended beyond the university, touching lives both in Uganda and internationally.

Prof. Epelu-Opio’s journey at Makerere began in 1973 when he joined the Department of Veterinary Anatomy as a Lecturer. He pursued his Ph.D. in Veterinary Anatomy while serving in this capacity, completing it in 1976. Prior to this, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medicine and Master of Science in Veterinary Anatomy from the University of Nairobi.

During his academic pursuits, Prof. Epelu-Opio demonstrated a passion for research and teaching. He served as a Research Assistant and later as a Temporary Technician and Demonstrator at the University of Nairobi, nurturing his academic interests and skills.

After obtaining his Ph.D., Prof. Epelu-Opio worked as a Senior Scientific Officer with the Animal Productivity Research Unit in Lusaka, Zambia, until 1982. Upon his return to Makerere, he held various academic and administrative positions, including Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy.

His contributions to academia were recognized with his appointment as a Professor in 1989. Subsequently, he assumed the role of Deputy Vice Chancellor, overseeing critical transitions in university admissions and governance until his retirement in 2004.

Beyond his academic achievements, Prof. Epelu-Opio played a significant role as a statesman and elder in Uganda. His leadership as the pioneer Chairman of the Presidential Commission for Teso contributed to peace-building efforts in the region. He also shared his insights and experiences through writing, documenting the Teso War in a book published by Fountain Publishers.

Umar Kakumba (PhD) stated on the University news portal: “We are grateful for his enduring legacy of service, leadership, and academic excellence. His impact on education and peace-building will continue to inspire future generations. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by his remarkable life. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his contributions never be forgotten.”
