Obongi | Uganda — Leaders in Obongi District have raised concerns about construction standards while monitoring ongoing renovations at the Sinyanya Landing Site, a project that has sparked excitement among local residents.
The inspection, conducted on Tuesday, was led by Hon. Zumura Maneno, the Woman MP for Obongi District, who also chairs the district roads committee. She expressed appreciation for the project’s progress but urged the contractor to ensure quality work and value for money.
“In many cases, some contractors in Obongi deliver substandard work. We have seen several projects that do not reflect the value of the funds allocated,” Hon. Zumura noted.
She commended the NRM government for ongoing service delivery programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP), but emphasized the need for accountability at the implementation level.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, and the Assistant RDC, Ms. Umuhoza Habiba Furaha, also participated in the inspection. They applauded the Ministry of Works and Transport for allocating funds to renovate the landing site, which had deteriorated over time due to poor workmanship in past projects.
Hon. Zumura issued a strong warning to the contractor, urging them to deliver high-quality work or face consequences.
“Any form of shoddy work will not be tolerated. Stern action should be taken against any contractor who compromises standards,” she said.
RDC Hashaka echoed her sentiments, addressing the contractor’s team directly:
“Corruption and substandard work in Obongi District will no longer be business as usual. We will ensure transparency and accountability at every stage of this project.”
The Sinyanya Landing Site is a critical infrastructure hub for the local fishing community and surrounding villages, and its successful renovation is expected to boost economic activity and improve transport access in the area.
