Police in Rukiga have initiated an investigation into the tragic demise of Ruth Nuwabine, a 34-year-old homemaker from the Nyankole community residing in Kakuto village, Kashekye parish, Kamwezi sub-county in Rukiga district.

Authorities report that on February 15th, 2024, at approximately 7:00 am, Nuwabine’s lifeless body was discovered by her children on a local mat in the sitting room of their home.

Nuwabine had reportedly been last seen alive on the previous day around 10:00 pm by her neighbor, Ampire Meron, with whom she had spent the day working to earn money.

Reports indicate that Nuwabine returned home around the same time, had dinner with her children, who are pupils at St. Lucia Primary School, and then retired to the sitting room while her children went to bed.

Around 1:00 am on February 15th, the children allegedly heard their mother crying out, mentioning someone named Tamba and pleading, “Why are you killing me?” They went to check on her but found her lying down, seemingly asleep. They also noticed a figure they recognized as Tamba leaving the premises wearing a distinctive red cap and black gum boots.

Tragedy struck the next morning when the children found their mother unresponsive and noticed blood near her head. They sought help from their neighbor, Ampire Meron, who confirmed Nuwabine’s demise and alerted local authorities.

Medical professionals from Kamwezi Health Center III, upon examination, confirmed signs of strangulation, leading authorities to suspect foul play. The area chairperson, Biryomumaisho Milton, was informed, and the matter was reported to the Kamwezi Police Station and subsequently to Rukiga Central Police Station.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the scene by a doctor from Kamwezi Health Center III confirmed the cause of death. Nuwabine’s body was then released to her relatives for burial arrangements.

As the investigation progresses, one suspect identified as Tamba has been apprehended to aid in the ongoing inquiries. The Rukiga Territorial Police urge anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist them in their investigation.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, emphasized that inquiries into the case are continuing as authorities work to unravel the circumstances surrounding Ruth Nuwabine’s untimely demise.
