(Katakwi) - Ugandan soldiers graduating from artillery and air defense training were urged to live disciplined lives to ensure they fulfill their duty to the nation.

(Katakwi) – The Third Division Commander, Maj. Gen. Don Nabasa, spoke at the graduation ceremony of 1,225 soldiers at the School of Artillery and Air Defense in Olilim, Katakwi District. He warned the newly trained personnel against indulging in alcohol and immoral lifestyles, which he said could lead to poor judgment and early death.

“When you drink, your judgment will not be upright, and you will end up doing wrong things that may lead to your death. We do not want to lose you; it would be a disservice to us, your commanders, and your country,” he cautioned.

The soldiers, who underwent a year-long training course, were urged to stay disciplined and maintain good health to serve their country effectively. General Nabasa specifically cautioned against “useless deaths” caused by reckless behavior, emphasizing the importance of their fitness and focus in their mission to protect Uganda.

The training covered artillery, air defense, and advanced weapon handling, equipping soldiers in ranks from private to sergeant with professional skills. Outstanding graduates were recognized with awards for their performance during the rigorous training.

Col. Rogers Dhikusoka Kitwala, the Commandant of the school, acknowledged challenges faced during the training, including flooding in the training grounds, which led to an increase in mosquito-borne diseases like malaria. Tragically, one trainee, Gift Muhumuza, drowned during the program.

Despite the setbacks, Col. Kitwala described the training as a success. “The students were fully equipped with adequate skills and have promised to offer the best service to their country,” he said.

Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Katakwi, Xavior Okwii, praised the government for investing in military and police training facilities in the district. He highlighted how these structures have improved security in the region, particularly by curbing cattle raids from neighboring Karamoja.

The ceremony ended with joyous celebrations as the newly trained soldiers danced to mark their accomplishment.
