The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) are actively working to de-escalate tensions stemming from reported encroachments into each other’s territories.
Recent incidents, including the erection of a flag and construction of structures by SSDF soldiers inside Uganda’s borders, prompted concerns. Defence Deputy Spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki addressed these issues, attributing the actions to missteps by individuals under their own command. He emphasized the need to discourage such acts to maintain harmonious coexistence.
To address the situation, security advisors from South Sudan have engaged local leaders in Uganda to resolve the matter through peaceful dialogue, fostering the spirit of cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
However, incidents of cross-border crimes persist. On February 20, 2024, armed individuals suspected to be affiliated with SSPDF allegedly robbed livestock from a Ugandan resident. UPDF has initiated communication with SSPDF counterparts to address these concerns, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and security along the border.
Efforts to resolve border tensions date back to 2019 when joint technical border committees were established to demarcate borders and sensitize border communities. Despite challenges such as funding constraints, progress has been made in acquiring necessary equipment and training committee members.
Past incidents of border conflicts, including attacks on Ugandan territory and deployment of SSPDF soldiers near UPDF detachments, underscore the urgency of resolving border disputes. Cooperation between Uganda and South Sudan remains essential to ensure stability and security along the border regions.
