A vehicle belonging to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) was damaged by unidentified individuals during a rally organized by the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) in Mbarara.
This event took place on Monday while the NUP leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, was present in the western region district to inaugurate offices for the local branch of his political party.
Allan Ssempebwa, the spokesperson for UNRA, expressed condemnation for the violence and disorder that transpired. He stated, “We should all condemn this level of violence and lawlessness.”
The UNRA spokesperson further explained that the vandalized van was performing its regular duties in Mbarara, the area where it is stationed. The incident occurred when the vehicle was struck and subjected to vandalism.
Earlier, activists associated with NUP made claims that a driver employed by UNRA had brandished a firearm towards Robert Kyagulanyi. Official sources denied these allegations.
A statement from NUP activist Motiv Kassaga asserted that despite the appearance of a peaceful day, an armed individual linked to law enforcement had driven a vehicle with the registration “Drone No UBD 251J” into their procession. This person purportedly displayed a pistol towards NUP’s leader, Bobi Wine. Kassaga shared photographic evidence of the UNRA van’s driver.
However, UNRA’s Ssempebwa countered these accusations, asserting that the driver was engaged in his professional responsibilities when the incident transpired. He questioned the notion of UNRA assets being immobilized due to the activities of others.
The police issued a warning to NUP regarding the maintenance of lawful conduct during their political rallies.
In response, NUP emphasized that their rallies remain peaceful, provided they are not provoked.
