Parliamentary representatives from Ghana, Grenada, and Maldives have landed in Uganda to participate in the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC). Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah Tayebwa, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests at Entebbe International Airport.
President of Grenada Senate, Dessima Williams, and Speaker of the House of Representatives from Grenada, Leo Cato, were among the early arrivals, followed by the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who was welcomed on Tuesday morning.
Tayebwa, expressing hospitality, referred to Ghana’s Speaker as being in his “second home.” Additionally, Maldives Speaker Mohamed Aslam received warm wishes for a pleasant stay in Uganda during his welcome.
With 43 Speakers confirming their attendance, the Commonwealth conference is scheduled to take place from January 3 to January 6, 2024, at the Speke Resort Munyonyo Hotel.
About the Conference
The CSPOC, initiated in 1969 by the then Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Lucien Lamoureux, gathers Speakers and Presiding Officers from the Commonwealth’s independent sovereign states. The conference aims to uphold impartiality and fairness among parliamentary leaders, promote knowledge of parliamentary democracy, and contribute to the development of parliamentary institutions.
