The Ankole Times

As Kenya marks the third day of national mourning, Raila Odinga Junior has released a heartfelt video tribute in honor of his father, the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

Shared on his official social media platforms, the video features rare archival footage capturing both the public and private life of the iconic opposition leader. It traces Raila Odinga’s journey from his early political activism and imprisonment in the 1980s to his tenure as Prime Minister and beyond, interwoven with intimate family moments.

The tribute opens with one of Raila Odinga’s recorded statements:

“Remember the words of the dead; they are powerful. What they left behind, do not discard.”

The compilation includes footage of key moments in Kenya’s political history, his release from detention, passionate campaign rallies, and state events, alongside personal memories such as his wedding, family gatherings, and touching moments with his grandchildren.

Among the scenes is a quiet clip of the late Odinga reading to one of his grandchildren, reinforcing the personal legacy he leaves behind.

The video ends with a message from Raila Junior:

“His story doesn’t end here; it lives on in every Kenyan who dares to dream.”

The tribute, captioned simply “Thank you, Baba,” has gone viral, resonating deeply with Kenyans across the country and the diaspora. Thousands have viewed and shared the video, praising it for capturing the spirit of a man who defined a political era.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a state funeral. Raila Odinga’s body is currently at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, where it was received earlier this week with full military honors following its arrival from Kerala, India.

Government sources have confirmed that memorial services will be held in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Bondo, Siaya County, ahead of the final burial.

President William Ruto declared a seven-day period of national mourning and a public holiday on Friday, October 17, to honor Odinga’s lifelong contribution to Kenya’s political and democratic progress.

As Kenya reflects on his legacy, Raila Odinga is being remembered not only as a statesman and reformist, but as a father, mentor, and symbol of resilience, whose influence will endure for generations to come.
