Traffic Chaos Expected as Government Closes Key Nateete–Nakawuka Road Section for Three Months

KAMPALA, Uganda — The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the temporary closure of a section of the Nateete–Nakawuka Road to pave way for drainage construction works aimed at improving the condition of the road and addressing persistent flooding.

According to the ministry, the closure will take effect on Friday, May 15, 2026, and is expected to last for approximately three months.

The affected stretch lies between the Mutundwe Road junction and Old Masaka Road junction around Nateete, an area that has for years experienced severe flooding, especially during the rainy season.

In a statement issued by the ministry, the Permanent Secretary, Bageya Waiswa, said the temporary closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of drainage culverts under the ongoing road upgrade project.

“The works are intended to improve drainage, reduce flooding, and enhance road durability,” Bageya said.

He explained that the project is intended to provide a long-term solution to flooding challenges that have frequently disrupted traffic movement along the busy route.

Motorists and residents have often complained about the poor state of the road, particularly during heavy rains when waterlogging makes the section nearly impassable and causes long traffic jams.

The ministry has advised motorists to use alternative routes during the construction period. These include Old Masaka Road, Masaka Road, Entebbe Road through Kajansi, as well as the Mutundwe and Wankulukuku connections.

Road users have also been urged to follow traffic guidance and observe directional signage that will be installed around the affected areas to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow throughout the construction period.

The Nateete–Nakawuka Road is a key transport corridor linking Kampala to Wakiso District and surrounding areas, serving thousands of motorists and commuters daily. Officials say the planned works will significantly improve road usability and transport efficiency once completed.
