On February 8th, 2024, tragedy struck the community of Kanyamisinga, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District, as two individuals lost their lives in a devastating landslide at a nearby sand quarry.
The victims, identified as Mugarura Anaklet and Niwamanya Barnet, were local sand miners engaged in loading sand onto a tipper lorry. Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moment when the ground suddenly gave way, engulfing the workers in a torrent of sand as they attempted to escape. Despite valiant rescue efforts by bystanders and local authorities, both Anaklet and Barnet tragically succumbed to suffocation beneath the weight of the landslide.
News of the incident spread rapidly, prompting a swift response from the Kanungu District Police. Led by OC Kihiihi Police Station, Asp Tumukunde, a team comprising homicide detectives, forensic experts, and security personnel rushed to the scene to assess the situation and maintain order.
Witness statements were carefully recorded to unravel the sequence of events leading up to the catastrophe. Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) meticulously examined and documented the scene, while the bodies of the deceased were recovered and transported to Kambuga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
In light of the disaster, the sand quarry was promptly shut down as investigations into the matter continue by the Kanungu District authorities. The cause of the landslide remains under investigation.
