The Taxpayer Register Expansion Program (TREP) Steering Committee convened at Serena Hotel, Kampala, to further streamline their processes based on resolutions from two key documents—the TREP charter and the Business Case. These approved strategies aim to facilitate the expansion of the tax net.
Representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Uganda Registration Services Bureau, Kampala Capital City Authority, and the Ministry of Local Government participated in the meeting, building upon resolutions made during a previous March meeting.
Ramathan Ggoobi, the Secretary to the Treasury, commended the engagement as a significant step toward revenue mobilization. Stressing the crucial role of TREP in increasing revenue collection to fully fund the country, he urged the team to view revenue mobilization as a critical mandate. Ggoobi emphasized the need for actionable steps to enhance both tax and non-tax revenue.
Acknowledging URA’s efforts in revenue collection, Ggoobi encouraged a concerted effort to give tax register expansion the attention it deserves. He called for collaboration with URA to collect substantial revenue, supporting the nation.
Ggoobi challenged agencies overseeing non-tax revenue to address revenue leakages by harmonizing systems and strengthening collaboration.
On a different note, John R. Musinguzi, the Commissioner General of URA, highlighted that the approval of the TREP charter and the business case would enhance URA’s day-to-day TREP operations and facilitate taxpayer compliance.
