Lira City, Uganda – The political race for the mayoral seat in Lira City West Division has officially kicked off, with more than five candidates successfully nominated by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to contest in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
According to Ipeto Aggrey James, the Lira City Returning Officer, the nomination exercise concluded successfully, with a strong line-up of candidates cleared to run. The nominated candidates include:
Mr. Emmanuel Ebong Opeto – Former Chairman of Ojwina Division and UPC flag bearer.
Mr. George Rashid Opio – The official NRM flag bearer, nominated in the afternoon amid celebrations from enthusiastic NRM supporters.
Mr. Anthony Ojuka – A prominent political figure, nominated as an Independent candidate to great jubilation.
Mr. Isaac Ogwal Ogweng – Nominated as an Independent, with significant support from his base.
Mr. Alany Charles – Nominated on the ticket of the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) Party.
