FT: Qatar 1-1 Switzerland
Qatar claimed their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after a stoppage-time own goal earned them a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their Group B match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Saturday.
Switzerland appeared to be heading for victory after Breel Embolo converted a 17th-minute penalty following a foul on Remo Freuler by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. However, Qatar equalised in the fourth minute of added time when Miro Muheim headed Homam Ahmed’s cross into his own net while under pressure from Boualem Khoukhi.
The result was a major moment for Qatar, who were playing at a World Cup on foreign soil for the first time. After losing all three matches as hosts in 2022, they finally secured a point on football’s biggest stage.
Switzerland dominated large parts of the first half and created several chances to extend their lead. Dan Ndoye was repeatedly involved in the Swiss attack, while Michel Aebischer had an effort cleared off the line before the interval. Despite their control, Murat Yakin’s side failed to turn their superiority into more goals.
Qatar had early chances of their own, with Edmilson Junior breaking clear in the second minute after a slip by Manuel Akanji, but his effort was saved by Gregor Kobel. The winger also threatened again before half-time, forcing another save from the Swiss goalkeeper.

The second half produced fewer clear opportunities, although Switzerland still came close through Ruben Vargas and Embolo. Their failure to kill off the match proved costly as Qatar pushed forward late and found an unlikely equaliser.
Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui praised his players for their discipline and belief after the final whistle.
“I am very proud of the team,” Lopetegui said. “Even if we had not scored, I would still have been proud of the mentality and discipline they showed. Fortunately, we scored and made history.”
For Switzerland, the draw will feel like two points dropped after registering 25 attempts and controlling much of the contest. For Qatar, it was a historic result and a sign of progress after their disappointing campaign four years ago.
Switzerland will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their next Group B match on Thursday, 18 June, while Qatar will play co-hosts Canada on the same day in Vancouver.
