Agricultural Transformation: Masaka Farmers Get Livestock and Equipment

In an effort to promote commercial farming, the Ugandan government, through the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), has distributed livestock and equipment to farmers and motorcycles to agricultural extension workers in the greater Masaka region.

This initiative is part of a comprehensive three-day campaign for farmer mobilization, education, value-addition, and service delivery. Various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) have been collaborating to execute this campaign in the districts of Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, and Sembabule.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, representing President Yoweri Museveni, spearheaded the campaign that commenced on October 27, 2023. The campaign encompassed agricultural expos, medical camps, and agricultural information-sharing sessions.

During Day 3 of the campaign, Prime Minister Nabbanja, accompanied by Member of Parliament Shartis Musherure, visited Semababule district. Here, they interacted with model farmers who have made substantial progress in coffee cultivation, cattle rearing, and goat farming. Technical officers from OPM, the Ministry of Agriculture, and other MDAs, along with local residents, escorted them to various villages in the district.

Prime Minister Nabbanja expressed hope that the achievements of these model farmers in Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, and Sembabule would inspire many Ugandans to engage in commercial agriculture.

Addressing the local community at Kitaasa Playground in Bukomansimbi, Nabbanja emphasized the significance of agriculture in Uganda. She encouraged farmers to maintain their dedication and hard work, assuring them of the government’s unwavering support, including mechanization, technology access, and educational resources for sustainable growth.

Nabbanja commended the efforts of model farmers and emphasized the role of events like this in facilitating knowledge exchange and community development.

Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze, who participated in the campaign, endorsed coffee cultivation for those with sizeable plots of land. He emphasized that expanding coffee production could significantly contribute to achieving the country’s export goals, as various ecological zones across Uganda support coffee cultivation.

The Red Cross Society, responsible for medical camps and expos, reported that they successfully collected 554 units of blood from the three districts of Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, and Sembabule during their extensive blood drive.

In Sembabule headquarters playground, the Agriculture Expo showcased a variety of agricultural equipment and materials, providing residents with opportunities to learn and gain insights from experts.

The provision of motorcycles to agricultural extension workers in Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, and Sembabule districts aims to enhance their support to local farmers by delivering essential agricultural information.
