Old students of Dr. Oryang SS in Minakulu, Oyam district, under their association “Dr. Oryang SS Old Students Association,” have come up with a new initiative of awarding the best-performing students in S.1 to S.6 and the most committed teachers as a way of encouragement and to improve academic performance at Dr. Oryang SS.

The best-performing students in academics and co-curricular activities will receive bursary sponsorship from the old students’ association, funded through their membership fees contributions and other support obtained through lobbying from well-wishers and friends. These funds will also be shared with committed teachers.

The Catholic-founded school, offering both O and A level classes, was established in 1997 and has been the best-performing school in Oyam district for the last seven years. However, its current academic performance is generally low compared to previous years, with a student enrollment of only 281. Over the last four years, students have been causing strikes, leading to poor performance and damage to school properties.

Daniel Ogwang, speaker of the Dr. Oryang SS Old Students Association, says their main goal is to offer an award based on improving academic performance in the school and attracting parents and children to enroll in the school.

The Dr. Oryang SS Old Students Association has 276 registered members, and annually they contribute 20,000/= to support school affairs.
