The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has expressed extreme concern over a viral video circulating on social media depicting an individual being subjected to corporal punishment by both soldiers and civilians.
According to the UPDF, investigations have revealed that the incident took place in Lagot village, Mucwini Sub-county, Kitgum District, where civilians apprehended a suspected thief. Instead of turning him over to the police, the locals opted for mob justice. The Regional District Commissioner (RDC) of Kitgum was contacted by concerned community members who were discouraged from taking the law into their own hands. Subsequently, the LC 3 chairman and GISO decided to deliver the suspect to a local UPDF detachment.
Regrettably, the detachment commander, without the knowledge or approval of his unit commander, allowed the perpetration of this heinous act, leading to the flogging of the suspect by both soldiers and civilians.
In response, the UPDF has taken swift action, arresting the involved soldiers. A public trial is set to be conducted, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring not only the administration of justice but also its transparency for all to witness.
The UPDF has condemns mob justice, whether executed by civilians or soldiers. The statement emphasizes that no one has the right to mete out corporal punishment, as such actions violate the constitutional laws of Uganda. The laws of the country provide a clear and lawful procedure for the arrest and detention of suspects.
The UPDF has assured the public of its dedication to upholding the rule of law and promises to continue ensuring strict adherence to legal protocols in dealing with criminal suspects.
