Omara Maxwell Wellborn, Maruzi County MP hopeful, is challenging some MPs in Lango over the Akii-Bua Stadium construction.

Maruzi County MP aspirant (UPC) Maxwell Wellborn Omara has caused sleepless nights for most members of parliament from Lango Sub-Region, saying that most MPs in Lango risk losing their respective parliamentary seats in 2026 if they fail to persuade His Excellency Gen. Yoweri Museveni Kaguta over the construction of Akii-Bua Stadium for AFCON 2023. “NO AKIIBUA STADIUM, NO VOTE” has now become a very common slogan for many aspiring candidates who are jogging for the 2026-2031 general elections. Among them is Maxwell Wellborn Omara, who is an aspiring candidate under the UPC ticket for Maruzi County. Maxwell has put the Lango parliamentary group to the task, urging them to mount pressure on the government to build Akii-Bua Stadium. If they fail, some of them may lose the election and will not return to parliament in 2026.

He stated in his social media message posted late on Friday night that some MPs have decided to deceive the voters in Lango, claiming that Akii-Bua Stadium will be built when it will not. As of now, “Why did they rush to address the press conference at parliament, and the outcome is now the opposite of what they wanted? Go back and request H.E the president to reconsider building Akii-Bua; if not, all of you must forget about going to Kampala as MPs in 2026.”

“As Lango, we are ready to contribute money to help the government co-fund the building of Akii-Bua Stadium and the Anai airport so that we can host AFCON in 2027,” said Omara. But this could have been presented before the president by the MPs themselves in their capacity, but none of them told the Fountain of Honour about this,” added Maxwell Omara.

“We also request His Excellency the President to visit Lango and listen to us from the ground; otherwise, our MPs have failed to tell him the interests of Lango. According to him, “should the Lango parliamentary group fail to correctly make the president understand the interests of the people of Lango as a tribe, many of them must forget to make it to the 12th parliament,” said Wellborn Omara.

I would like to say it without fear or favor that most MPs in Lango are cowardly, and we need to replace them with brilliant new leaders who can tell the truth to the president and to the people of Lango. For example, if you compare MPs from Acholi, Teso, Bunyoro, West Nile, and Karamoja, they are well represented and they speak one language when it comes to presenting an issue. But when it comes to Lango MPs, some of them are too disorganized. No Akii-Bua, No Vote – take it from me.

The president, while addressing the nation on Friday evening on televisions and TV stations, made his position clear on the issues of the Akii-Bua Stadium Construction. Recently, Lango activists led by Otto Amiza Isha and Mawa Moses (NUP) launched the exercise of gathering 1000 signatures to demand why Akii-Bua Stadium Construction was excluded from the list. Unconfirmed reports have it that some sections of voters want to meet the president over the issue, and they want the current serving MPs in Lango excluded from the list of delegates meeting the president, probably early in January 2024.

The Ankole Times newspaper made several phone calls to the chairperson of Lango Parliamentary Group (LPG), Hon. Judith Alyek, to comment on the matter, but she did not pick up our repeated phone calls on December 23 (Saturday afternoon).
