Bars on Notice: Overnight Curfew in Sheema Amid Security Concerns

Sheema District is ramping up security measures this festive season, urging residents to be vigilant and report suspicious activity following the recent attack in Kamwengye by suspected ADF rebels.

RDC Muhindo Prekelia emphasized personal responsibility, reminding everyone that their own homes are the first line of defense. She cited the Kyabandara attack as a stark reminder of the potential for violence, even during festive celebrations.

To address concerns about noise pollution facilitating criminal activity, Prekelia mandated bars and churches seeking to hold overnight events to obtain permission from the Inspector General of Police. This aims to prevent unauthorized gatherings and ensure proper oversight.

Residents in Kabwohe, a town within Sheema, were advised to take proactive steps like installing security lights, while churches were encouraged to deploy metal detectors to mitigate potential security risks in crowded spaces.

ASP Twesigye Caleb, Sheema’s district liaison officer, echoed these concerns, highlighting the anticipated rise in festive season crimes like highway robberies and cattle theft. He urged people to avoid carrying large amounts of cash and unnecessary nighttime travel, emphasizing the importance of heightened security awareness during this period.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Rubanda district, investigations are underway to determine the cause of death of a 22-year-old man discovered in a trench near Kashekyera trading center. While initial reports suggest the victim, identified as Christopher Tushabirane, may have been involved in criminal activity, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, assures the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing.

Both incidents underscore the importance of increased vigilance and cooperation with authorities during the festive season. By prioritizing personal security, reporting suspicious activity promptly, and adhering to established regulations, communities can work together to ensure a safe and joyful holiday period.
