The outgoing Leader of Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, has offered counsel to his successor, Joel Ssenyonyi, cautioning against engaging in petty arguments that may divert attention from executing the responsibilities of the new role.
Last week, the National Unity Platform (NUP) underwent changes in their parliamentary leadership, appointing Ssenyonyi as the new Leader of the Opposition. Mpuuga, speaking at a memorial mass in Masaka City, warned Ssenyonyi about potential internal disruptions that could undermine his efforts to fulfill the party’s primary aspirations.
While acknowledging the constitutional mandate of the Leader of the Opposition in providing oversight, Mpuuga highlighted the public perception that associates the position with potential misuse of public funds. He urged Ssenyonyi to confront pressures and distractions that might hinder his efficient performance, potentially tarnishing the party’s reputation.
Expressing confidence in Ssenyonyi’s abilities, Mpuuga also cautioned against opportunistic cliques seeking personal relevance around leaders, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive social conduct that reflects well on the party.
Ssenyonyi, the second Leader of the Opposition in Parliament from the NUP, expressed readiness for the tasks ahead and pledged to seek guidance from his predecessors. NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi called on supporters to avoid instigating disputes among leaders and structures, emphasizing the need for unity to achieve the party’s ambitions.
