Vaccines Distributed to Tackle Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak

The Agriculture State Minister in charge of Animal Industry, Lt. Col. Bright Rwamirama, has called on farmers in the cattle corridor districts to be vigilant in the fight against the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). In an interview with local press, Rwamirama revealed reported FMD cases in Gomba, Lyantonde, and Kiruhura districts.

The government has responded by providing vaccines to all affected districts to control the FMD outbreak. Rwamirama urged farmers to use the vaccines properly and expressed disappointment with the leadership of Lyantonde District for opening Kyemamba Market, which he believes is responsible for the spread of FMD to other districts.

Additionally, the minister highlighted a few pockets of Anthrax in Rakai District, cautioning the public against consuming meat from dead animals as it poses health risks. He emphasized that laws prohibit the consumption of meat from deceased animals.

Rwamirama warned farmers and traders about the dangers of FMD, emphasizing its impact not only on animals but also on markets, particularly exports. He called for preventive measures, including avoiding unnecessary movement of animals.

The government is committed to investing more in prevention mechanisms and pursuing a one-health concept to ensure Ugandan animals meet international trading standards. Rwamirama encouraged the public to improve their livelihoods through farming, urging participation in government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM).
