Betty Nampijja, a 23 year old resident of Kalagala village in Kikyusa sub-county, lost her life while attempting to fix a faulty TV antenna. The unfortunate incident occurred when Nampijja, who had recently purchased a TV set, decided to erect an antenna near a high-power voltage wire to enhance signal reception.
According to John Ojokuna, the Luwero District Police Commander, the fatal event unfolded on Tuesday at approximately 5:00 pm. Nampijja, frustrated by the delayed response from an electrician, took matters into her own hands and attempted to repair the antenna. Tragically, she was electrocuted during the process, and her lifeless body was discovered by her husband upon his return.
Ojokuna emphasized the importance of seeking professional assistance for tasks requiring experience or qualifications, cautioning the public against attempting tasks beyond their expertise. He noted that Nampijja had been advised to wait for an electrician but chose to proceed with the repair independently, leading to the fatal outcome.
Following the incident, the Luwero District Police alerted the local UMEME branch office, prompting them to switch off the power line associated with the tragic event. The community mourns the loss of Betty Nampijja and reflects on the importance of prioritizing safety in household activities.
