Francis Zaake, a controversial Ugandan lawmaker, has made a startling revelation, asserting that high-ranking officials are orchestrating a plan to assassinate him. In a post on X, Zaake disclosed that he received credible information from a whistleblower about the alleged plot, implicating regime officials, including the head of a government organ, a regime minister, and a high-ranking security official.

Zaake, however, refrained from disclosing the identities of the implicated officials or providing concrete evidence to substantiate his claims. This alarming announcement echoes a troubling trend in Uganda, where officials expressing fears for their lives have, in the past, met tragic ends.

Former police officer Muhammad Kirumira serves as a haunting example, as he openly acknowledged the dangers he faced for exposing corruption within the police force, stating, “When you speak, you die. When you keep quiet, you die. Better speak and die when the message has reached people.” Kirumira was fatally shot in 2018, underscoring the perilous environment for those critical of the government.

Efforts to contact Zaake for additional comments on the matter have thus far been unsuccessful.

Zaake, known for his outspoken nature, has previously faced disciplinary committees in Parliament for his confrontational behavior towards fellow legislators. In one instance, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa referred Zaake to the Rules, Privileges, and Discipline Committee for investigation following allegations of vulgar language against Rakai Woman MP, Juliet Suubi Kinyamatama. The incident occurred during a visit to her constituency, where Zaake reportedly insulted Kinyamatama, questioning her suitability and labeling her a prostitute.

Furthermore, Zaake faced disciplinary action for using social media to criticize the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among. The recent claim of an assassination plot adds a sinister dimension to Zaake’s already turbulent political journey.

“In case the worst happens,” Zaake stated in his post on X, “I have shared with relevant people details of the plot and identities of the individuals involved,” leaving the nation on edge as it awaits further developments.
