President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has emphasized the importance of unity in East Africa, cautioning against divisionism, which he views as a setback for the region. The President made these remarks during the 60th Zanzibar Revolution anniversary celebrations held at Amaan Sports Complex, Zanzibar.
The Zanzibar Revolution took place in January 1964, resulting in the overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and the predominantly Arab government by the island’s majority Black African population. Zanzibar subsequently united with Tanganyika in 1964, forming the United Republic of Tanzania.
President Museveni, invited by H.E Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of Tanzania, commended the unity demonstrated by Zanzibar and Tanganyika in creating the United Republic of Tanzania. He stressed the significance of togetherness for Africa’s development, citing the success of the East African common market as an example.
According to President Museveni, divisions hinder progress, and unity is crucial for Africa to achieve its developmental goals. He expressed gratitude for the unity demonstrated by the people of Zanzibar and Tanganyika.
President of Zanzibar, H.E Hussein Ali Mwinyi, thanked President Suluhu and neighboring countries, including Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, for their continuous support to Zanzibar. He acknowledged the role of unity in achieving milestones and prayed for blessings on the country’s endeavors.
In her remarks, President Suluhu congratulated Zanzibar on reaching the 60th revolution anniversary. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda also spoke on the historic day, recalling the bravery of those who fought injustice, leading to the unity between Zanzibar and Tanganyika. He emphasized the importance of Africans coming together to solve their own problems.
