The Uganda Police Force announced on Monday that it successfully arrested seven suspects involved in snatching phones and bags from vehicles at various junctions in Kampala city. The arrests came as a response to escalating concerns from the public about the surge in such incidents within Lower Nsooba, Upper Nsooba, UEB, Kagugube, and surrounding areas.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, disclosed that Wandegeya Police conducted targeted operations against criminal gangs operating in the mentioned regions. As a result, seven suspects were apprehended, with some captured in the act by CCTV cameras while snatching phones from unsuspecting motorists.
Among those arrested, notable individuals include Ogema Rickson alias Ricky, operating around Shell Mulago and Mawanda, Kakooza Mike alias Aidari (16 years old), Kigozi Marvin (22 years old), Mark Ssekyanzi (19 years old), Bruce Amanya (22 years old), and Abdu Lukwago alias Patrol (20 years old).
According to Owoyesigyire, this group, in collaboration with others still at large, has been actively involved in coordinated attacks, snatching, and robbing members of the public within Kampala city. The suspects have been charged with aggravated robbery, presented before the courts of law, and subsequently remanded.
Addressing the growing concern, Owoyesigyire stated that the Police are committed to ongoing operations targeting criminal activities of this nature. Additionally, permanent deployments will be established in areas significantly affected by these groups to enhance public safety.
The deputy spokesperson expressed gratitude for the community’s collaboration, acknowledging their role in providing crucial information that facilitated the successful arrests.
