Uganda’s Gender Minister, Betty Amongi, affirmed that the temporary closure of businesses along roads facilitating the transportation of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) delegates is temporary, and affected business owners will be permitted to resume their activities at the appropriate time. The announcement was made during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday.

Minister Amongi emphasized the significance of the NAM summit in elevating Uganda’s profile and promoting the country. She acknowledged that certain interventions, including the temporary closure of businesses and the relocation of Bodaboda stages, may cause short-term inconvenience. However, she stressed that the benefits resulting from the successful organization of the event will yield tangible results for the country in the years to come.

“The summit has raised the country and the importance of marketing Uganda as a country,” Minister Amongi stated, noting that despite the inconveniences, the long-term advantages for Uganda are substantial.

The minister highlighted that the hotel industry is already reaping benefits, with many hotels in the Kampala metropolitan area reporting full capacity. This surge in demand for accommodations during the summit is expected to translate into significant income for the industry.

As part of the summit’s arrangements, the government withdrew vehicles from officials, including ministers and permanent secretaries attending the NAM and G77+China summits. To supplement the transportation needs, the Chinese government generously donated a total of 140 SUVs.

The 19th NAM summit, which began on January 15, is scheduled to continue until January 20, followed by the G77+China summit from January 21 to 23 at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala. Delegates from 120 countries are participating in the NAM summit, with representation from 134 countries expected during the subsequent G77+China conference.
