The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) is actively seeking Shs5 billion from the 2024/25 national budget to establish a pig genetic center. The proposal, presented through the House Committee on Agriculture, aims to enhance pig breeding on a larger scale and serve as a skilling center for pig farmers nationwide.
Ms Janet Okori-Moe, the chairperson of the committee, urged her counterparts to endorse the request, emphasizing the importance of providing improved pig genetic resources. While the committee observed that Shs10 billion was initially budgeted for the pig breeding center activity, only Shs5 billion was allocated. Ms Okori-Moe recommended an additional Shs5 billion to meet the intended goals.
“This is a key activity; if you are aware, Uganda was placed number two on the consumption of these animals, but only in Africa,” she remarked.
However, the proposal faced opposition from some legislators, including Mr. Stephen Kangwagye, the Bukanga County MP. He expressed disappointment, stating that the committee and the government were neglecting issues such as Anthrax, causing significant problems in the cattle sector.
Kangwagye emphasized the urgency of addressing animal diseases like Anthrax, which are impacting sales and production in the region. He pointed out recent outbreaks in Rakai and neighboring districts, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
The final decision on the matter is pending, as the budget committee has yet to deliberate on various issues before presenting a conclusive position to Parliament.
