Principal Judge Dr. Flavian Zeija has called on judicial officers to promptly release certified copies of court documents to litigants, ensuring they have sufficient time to file appeals. Zeija emphasized the importance of allowing litigants to challenge decisions, stating that some officers may be hesitant to have their rulings contested.
The Principal Judge made these remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of four newly appointed Grade One Magistrates and Acting Chief Magistrate Hilda Bakanansa Walaga. The ceremony took place at the Judiciary Headquarters in Kampala, where the judicial officers pledged to execute their duties impartially and dispense justice without bias.
The newly appointed magistrates are Aisha Nakiwate, Pepera Edith Anne, Derrick Kamanzi, and Ackline Kembabazi. Additionally, Hilda Bakanansa Walaga, formerly the Manager in charge of Prosecutions at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), took the oath as Acting Chief Magistrate.
Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo emphasized the importance of understanding the constitution and treating all litigants equally. He urged the judicial officers to dispense justice without fear, favor, affection, or ill will, emphasizing the equality of all individuals seeking justice.
Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera advised the newly appointed officers to maintain good relationships with colleagues, government agencies, and the public. He highlighted the significance of monthly performance reports and stressed the importance of treating all cases with equal importance.
The ceremony marked the induction of the new judicial officers into their roles within the Judiciary, emphasizing their responsibility to uphold the law and serve the public.
