Three Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) employees stand accused of abusing their positions for personal gain. Tom Kimera, Maliza Mukembo Tibewolwa, and Grace Opoka Amony, set to appear in court on January 25th, face charges of abuse of office stemming from events in June 2020.
The trio, occupying key roles within URC (procurement, human resources, legal), allegedly acted against the company’s interests while serving on an evaluation committee. Specifically, the prosecution claims they improperly approved Deloitte Uganda Limited’s eligibility to provide consultancy services for recruiting the next URC managing director.
This alleged misdeed, according to the prosecution, violated Ugandan procurement laws and procedures. Conviction under Section 11(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2009 could bring each defendant seven years in jail, a hefty fine (up to sh2.9 million), or both. Adding insult to injury, a Section 46 conviction also carries a ten-year ban from holding public office.
The accused, having initially denied the charges and gained bail, await an update on the investigation’s progress during their upcoming court appearance. The future for Kimera, Tibewolwa, and Amony remains uncertain, shrouded in the rails of corruption allegations.
