Makerere University’s iconic Main Building, known as the Ivory Tower, is expected to be completed and ready for use by July, as announced by Vice-Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe. Most of the structural work has been completed over the past few years, with the remaining tasks focusing on completion and repairing the roof over the main hall.

The historic building suffered a devastating fire in September 2020, resulting from a short circuit in the faulty electrical system, according to a report by the Criminal Investigations Department and the Ministry of Works. The government allocated Shillings 21 billion for restoration works, aiming to have the building ready for the University’s centenary celebrations in October 2022.

Initially, plans were to expedite the restoration for the centenary celebrations, but delays occurred due to the demolition of the existing structure, recommended by engineers for safety reasons. The demolition process aimed to preserve surviving windows and items, causing unexpected delays.

In a previous interview, Director of Excel Construction Ltd, Satvinder Saini, stated that meeting the record time was not possible. The discovery of a deteriorated basement, housing a printer, during the demolition process led to revised plans, including the rebuilding of the basement.

While offices from the main building have temporarily shifted to Frank Kalimuzo CTF 1, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, deputies, University Secretary, and University Council Room, the upcoming reopening of the Ivory Tower marks a significant milestone for Makerere University.
