The Indian Association in Uganda commemorated a noteworthy milestone as it celebrated 101 years of its presence in Uganda with a grand event held at the Lugogo Cricket Oval over the weekend.
This event also coincided with India’s 76th Independence Day, originally observed on August 15th.
Kansai Plascon, a paint manufacturer, co-sponsored the event in line with its corporate social investment strategy aimed at supporting communities. Managing Director Santosh Gumte expressed pride in their involvement, stating, “We are pleased to be part of this vibrant celebration and to continue our tradition of giving back to the community.”
The event was graced by Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, and Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority, emphasizing its significance.
The festivities featured captivating performances by renowned Indian artists such as Shivam Singh, Jared Ali, and Senjuti Das, along with electrifying Indian dance groups.
Established in 1922, the Indian Association has played a pivotal role in the Ugandan Indian community, fostering peace and promoting social cohesion. Through its charitable activities, the association contributed significantly to eradicating Indophobia from the Ugandan African community, facilitating harmonious coexistence between the two communities.
Today, despite representing less than 1% of the population, the Indian community makes a substantial contribution to the Ugandan economy through tax revenue.
