A retired soldier from the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has been apprehended in Kanungu district on suspicion of fatally injuring a civilian.

The incident occurred in Kyamugaga village, Nyarutojo parish, Kambuga Sub-county, where Private Benson Bariyo, the retired soldier, allegedly engaged in a dispute with Moses Kihwahwa, resulting in the latter’s death.

According to eyewitness Zubeida Kababule, the altercation unfolded when Bariyo, after a day’s work in the garden, visited a friend’s home and engaged in a conversation about local insecurity. During the discussion, it was mentioned that a youth named Junior had been stealing and selling household items to Kihwahwa.

Upon hearing his name mentioned, Kihwahwa confronted Bariyo and his friend. Armed with a stick, Kihwahwa attempted to strike Bariyo, who defended himself using a machete from the garden, ultimately inflicting severe injuries on Kihwahwa, rendering him unconscious.

Kihwahwa was rushed to Kambuga Hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

Elly Maate, the spokesperson for Kigezi Region, confirmed the incident, stating that following Kihwahwa’s death, residents sought retribution by targeting Bariyo’s home. Investigations into the matter are currently underway.
