The Uganda Netball Normalisation Committee, chaired by Moses Mwase, is making strides towards revitalizing the sport. During a stakeholders meeting held at the Uganda Olympic Committee offices in Lugogo on February 29, Mwase assured club leaders of the committee’s commitment to supporting player activity through organized competitions.
Mwase emphasized the intention to establish an advisory committee to guide the commencement of activities in the 2024 calendar year. This committee, yet to be named, will play a pivotal role in strategizing and implementing plans for the sport’s resurgence.
Acknowledging the significance of international engagements for netball clubs, Mwase stressed the importance of ensuring opportunities for participation, particularly for defending champions like NIC. The meeting, attended by club chairpersons, secretaries, coaches, and district netball association officials, underscored the necessity of proper procedures before resuming activities.
Despite calls for a swift return to league action, concerns were raised regarding the authority to sanction such events and adherence to constitutional and regulatory frameworks. Mohammed Sifuna, Chairman of Busia Netball Club, advocated for a methodical approach, emphasizing the need to establish clarity on regulations and organizational structures before league commencement.
George William Bwambale, former Vice Chairman of the UNF, echoed Sifuna’s sentiments, urging patience and support for the Normalisation Committee’s efforts to reorganize the sport effectively, including the facilitation of upcoming elections.
Jocelyn Ucanda, Manager of the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) netball club, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the meeting. She highlighted the renewed sense of direction and optimism among players and stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of clarity and organization in restoring the vibrancy of netball in Uganda.
