The Uganda Police Marine Unit released a statement on March 12, 2024, regarding a distressing incident involving a boat near Zinga Island. According to the report, a boat belonging to Muregye Steven Youth Councilor Bussi Sub County departed from Balabala landing site in Zinga Island, headed for Nakiwogo landing site at around 5:00 AM local time. The boat was carrying 16 passengers.
During the journey, the boat unfortunately capsized. Prompt response from the Uganda Police Marine Unit and other rescue teams led to the successful rescue of 11 individuals who were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
Despite these efforts, the tragic incident resulted in the loss of three lives. Among the deceased were identified as Mrs. Nalusa, Lucy, a juvenile, and Lucy’s mother, Nigina. Their bodies were recovered from the water, and condolences were extended to their families by the authorities.
Moreover, two individuals, namely Emanuel Nsubuga, the coxswain, and Odeke, remain unaccounted for. The search efforts are ongoing to locate them, with the Uganda Police Marine Unit collaborating with other relevant authorities to conduct thorough search and rescue operations.
In light of this incident, the Uganda Police Marine Unit emphasized the importance of exercising caution and adhering to safety guidelines while traveling by boat, especially during adverse weather conditions. Ensuring the safety and well-being of all waterway users remains a top priority for the authorities.
