Tensions erupted in Kumi District as a faction of Anglican faithful blocked Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba from accessing St. James Church premises during his pastoral visit. The incident unfolded when Bishop Mike Esakan sought to reclaim the church, which had been occupied by another group, sparking outrage among congregants.
Despite police intervention to restore calm, the splinter Reformed Anglican Church faction refused to allow Archbishop Kaziimba and his team entry. Nevertheless, the Archbishop seized the opportunity to call on the government to assist the Church of Uganda in reclaiming its properties from the splinter group.
Dr. Kaziimba emphasized the importance of upholding property rights and urged individuals to establish their own churches if they choose to separate. He denounced the forceful takeover of St. James Church as a robbery, highlighting the need for government intervention to protect citizens and their property.
The protracted dispute in the Diocese of Kumi stems from the revocation of Rev. Charles Oode Okunya’s appointment by the House of Bishops in 2019. Following a court ruling in favor of the Church of Uganda, the aggrieved faction formed the Reformed Anglican Church. However, Bishop Esakan claimed that the tide has turned, with the majority of churches reclaimed by the original Anglican Church.
While Bishop Esakan praised lay readers for their support, Rev. Okunya emphasized the importance of dialogue and understanding among communities. He stressed that the essence of the Church lies in the hearts of its followers, urging for peaceful resolution amidst the ongoing tensions.
