Members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Busoga, part of the party’s Katonga faction, have unanimously supported the idea of creating a new political party, breaking away from the existing Najjanankumbi-based party.
All 12 districts in the Busoga region, including Jinja city, have expressed their preference for forming a new party rather than continuing with the current Najjanankumbi-based party. They argue that the party has deviated from its original path.
These decisions were reached during a consultative meeting held for Busoga at Mpumudde Estate Primary School in Jinja City. The event was attended by key figures including the party’s founding president, Dr. Kizza Besigye, members of the FDC National Executive Council (NEC), and Members of Parliament.
During the meeting, district representatives voiced their resolutions. Asuman Mutaasa, the chairperson of Kamuli district FDC, stated that their district had decided to rebrand and form a new party, with Dr. Kizza Besigye taking leadership.
Similarly, Hassan Muyinda, the chairperson of Iganga district FDC, mentioned that their members unanimously agreed to start afresh rather than pursue reconciliation talks.
Various district leaders echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for a new formation rooted in activism as they continue striving for political freedom.
Proscovia Salaalmu Musumba, the former FDC vice-chairperson for eastern Uganda, explained that delegates were presented with several options, including attacking the FDC headquarters, legal recourse, reconciliation talks, joining other parties, or creating a new party. The consensus from Busoga was against reconciliation with the Najjanankumbi group.
Dr. Besigye encouraged members to remain committed to the struggle against what he described as the domination of the majority by a minority. He reaffirmed his dedication to the cause, vowing to continue the fight.
Members of parliament from Jinja, Timothy Batuwa, David Aga Isabirye, and Francis Mwijukye, urged their colleagues to stay focused on the objective.
Key party figures, including FDC chairperson Wasswa Biriggwa and acting secretary-general Harold Kaija, were present at the event, underlining the significance of the discussions taking place within the party.
