The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, has urged civil servants to avoid corruption in their work.

Todwong made this statement on Tuesday while speaking to members of the Town Clerk’s Association of Uganda (TCAU). This association includes town clerks from urban councils across the country. He was speaking at the launch of their five-year strategic plan for 2024/28, held at Kira Municipality headquarters.

“Be strict about accountability,” Todwong advised the town clerks. He believes that by being firm on proper spending, they can improve government services. Todwong emphasized that if clerks prioritize accountability, it sets a good example for junior officers to follow suit and perform well in their duties.

Todwong warned civil servants against misusing government resources, stating that it tarnishes the reputation of the ruling NRM party. He emphasized the importance of serving the people with dignity and diligence, even if it means facing opposition from corrupt individuals.

He assured members of the association that the government is committed to implementing the strategic plan they have launched. Todwong acknowledged concerns such as the lack of offices for clerks in newly established councils and limited funding for important projects. He promised to communicate these issues to the appropriate authorities through the proper channels.

Addressing conflicts between civil servants and political leaders, Todwong stressed the importance of maintaining good working relationships. He believes that disagreements can hinder services to the public, so it’s crucial for leaders to be tolerant and cooperative for the benefit of the people.

Bernard Yiga, the Town Clerk of Kira Municipality and President of TCAU, called on the NRM to collaborate closely with civil servants for the betterment of the country. He emphasized the importance of honesty and truthfulness in providing services to Uganda and future generations.

It’s worth noting that while the NRM Party emphasizes the importance of fighting corruption, it has faced criticism in the past for not effectively tackling corruption at all levels of government. Critics argue that the party often targets lower-ranking officials rather than addressing corruption among high-ranking members and political elites.
