The Makerere University community is mourning the loss of Dr. Martin Aliker, a revered figure who dedicated his life to service and leadership. The Council, Senate, Alumni, and students extended their deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Dr. Aliker’s journey with Makerere College began in 1948, where he demonstrated academic excellence and received a scholarship to Northwestern University, Illinois. There, he pursued a Bachelor of Political Science and later obtained a Doctor of Dental Surgery through a Fulbright Fellowship. His academic achievements culminated in becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of the United Kingdom.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Aliker embodied professionalism, hard work, and excellence. He excelled as an alumnus, scholar, influential business leader, and entrepreneurial mentor, leaving an indelible mark on Uganda, Africa, and the Commonwealth.
According to a statement on the University news portal, Dr. Martin Aliker’s name became synonymous with dedicated service, integrity, and business acumen. His life served as a beacon of inspiration for both the young and old alike. In recognition of his contributions, Makerere University appointed him as the Chairperson of the pioneer Board of Trustees for the Makerere University Endowment Fund (MakEF) on July 17, 2014.
Under his leadership, the Inaugural Board achieved remarkable success. By the end of their term in 2019, MakEF’s onshore fund had grown from nothing to UGX 1.5 Billion, with an offshore fund valued at 1.5 Million GBP.
Umar Kakumba, PhD Acting Vice Chancellor, stated that as the academic community of Makerere reflected on Dr. Martin Aliker’s extraordinary life, “we express gratitude for the profound impact he made on our university and beyond. We pray that his family finds comfort in the memories of his inspirational life and that his soul rests in eternal peace.”
